The Scope includes:

The purpose of the project is to repair and upgrade the existing bulk irrigation water supply system in Onseepkans. Bulk water is currently supplied from the Orange River to 370ha of irrigation plots through a 16km long earth canal. Farmers currently practice flood irrigation. Bulk of the farmers are small scale farmers, with 6 farmers farming on a 4ha plot. System designed to supply bulk water to 620ha of irrigation area in total.
The new bulk water system replaces the existing canal, and comprises of the following:
Citrus Packhouse and cooling – 300t per day
The facility is 800m² under roof with more than 400 people working in the facility. The packhouse receives 320 tons of oranges which is then cleaned, pre-sorted, treated and waxed. The waxed products are then graded and sorted in quality punnets accurately made to weight and then assembled into pallets. The pallets is then cooled to 4°C in 24 hours and then shipped in a total of 15 refrigerated shipping containers.
The facility was design to comply with GlobalGAP and BRC requirements and achieved one of the highest scores with a first audit. The design took into account the logistics of receiving and shipping large volumes of fruit, managing 450 workers and handling and distributing packing materials.
New Bulk Water Supply Pipeline and River Abstraction Pump Station
The Project consisted of a new 800mm Diameter GRP Pipeline of 6km long with an elevation change of 132m. The design flow is 2800m³/h and is supplied by 4 x 450kW horizontal split casing centrifugal pump sets driven by Variable Speed Drives.
The challenge was to design for varying river levels. To achieve this the pumps were installed on trolleys that move up and down the river and connect to fixed T-pieces in a pipe installed in the stabilized and protected river bank.
During the flooding and for servicing the pumps, the trolleys can be moved all the way to the top to the overhead gantry. The Transient Surge Analysis was done in house and the Surge was reduced by installing a non-return valve and bypass two thirds along the line.
The project is located between the towns of Worcester and Robertson (TR31/01), Robertson and Ashton (TR31/02) and Robertson and Bonnievale (MR287) in the Cape Winelands District Municipality of the Western Cape Province. The Scope of Works include:
Road Works: The repair of surface and base failures. Application of a texture slurry. Reseal of the entire road surface with a double split seal using S-R1, S-R2, S-E1 and CRS65 binder with 20mm and 7mm roadstone. Construction of new passing lanes from km16.40 to km20.20 and km23.70 to km27.04. Upgrading of selected intersections with new turning lanes on TR31/01 at km13.58 (Nuy intersection), km35.55 (Goree intersection), on TR31/02 at km9.57 (Klaasvoogds intersection) and km13.57 (Arabella intersection). New A-E2 asphalt overlay on TR31/01 from the Silwerstrand intersection at km44.15 to km45.02 and around the traffic circle in Robertson at the start of TR31/02 and MR287. New A-E2 asphalt overlay at various intersections on TR31/01, TR31/02 and MR287.
Structural Works: Extension of six large existing box culverts with cast in-situ concrete. Extension of twenty-three small existing box and pipe culverts with cast in-situ concrete headwalls, wing walls and apron slabs.
Ancillary Works: Upgrading of the surfacing of three existing rest areas. Refurbishing of existing guardrails and installation of new guardrails. Construction of new concrete edge beams. Repair of existing fencing and installation of new fencing. Repair of existing and installation of new road signs. Construction of new asphalt berms. Construction of new concrete down chutes. Paving of the pedestrian walkways at the traffic circle in Robertson and the construction of gabion boxes and mattresses at the in- and outlets of culverts.
The project is called the “Bucket and Bowl Workshop” because it became the metalwork workshop for mine machinery buckets and bowels at Kumba’s Sishen mine. The mine has identified the need for new haul truck maintenance and tyre handling facilities in Sishen due to the heavy Mining Equipment (HME) fleet expansion required for the Life of Mine (LOM). The workshop was designed to have the space and facilities for mechanical and tyre repairs and the maintenance of the new ultra Kumatso 960 and 860 E mining trucks. The workshop, measuring 50 x 40 m, with a height of 27 m and internal footprint of 2 000 m², has been fitted with two 80 t overhead cranes, and the largest commercially installed tyre press (450 t) in the country. It also has four undercover bays and six apron bays outside. The scope of work for the ‘Bucket and Bowl’ workshop also incorporated a tyre yard for storing up to 280 tyres for the mega trucks, an adjacent administration building, compressor room, nitrogen tank storage slab, sewer pump station and 11 kV sub-station.
BVi was responsible for the electrical and mechanical design and contract management for various new buildings and workshops.

The design of the new HVAC system comprising of chillers located in the basement and two off closed circuit cooling towers located on the North Block roof.
The floors are air-conditioned via Fan Coil Units.
The Outdoor is pre-cooled to 22°C before it is distributed to the Fan Coil Units, the quantity of outdoor air is control via CO2 sensors fitted on each floor.
The common entrance lobbies are air-conditioned via two of Air handling units located on the roofs of the South and North blocks.
Basement Parking P2 in mechanically ventilated via 4 off Extract and Supply air fans, the Extract fans are fire rated and doubles up as Smoke Ventilation fans, these fans are also controlled on CO sensors.
All ablutions are mechanically ventilated, lift shafts and stairwells are pressurised.
BVi Consulting Engineers was approached to investigate the water supply situation in Loeriesfontein, Northern Cape in May 2013. The availability of groundwater had been reducing steadily since 2011.

Scope of works:
The new design consists of 34 Variable Refrigerant Volume (VRV) system from Daikin. These systems are located on 4 plant room areas on various roofs through out the building. The building was broken up into 4 blocks. Each block is served by a plant area. The building area is 10 500 m². With about 2MW of Cooling Capacity in total.
Each lecture theatre, seminar and tutorial room on first floor have there own AC Unit. Each room is able to control the AC unit via a controller located inside the room. Open plan offices and teaching areas are served with a mix of ducted hideaway units and cassettes. Each area has a controller that controls the unit is that location.
The cellular offices on the upper floors each have a mid wall split AC unit that serves that office. Each office has a controller that allows for individual control.
Outside air is ducted into the building with use of a ducted fan system for each block. Each system had a shaft which it uses to duct outside air into each floor. The Building is equipped with a Daikin Building Manager for building wide control of all the AC with in the building. There is also a Building management system for all the extraction and ventilation fans that allows for control and monitoring.
BVi offered a full professional service which included: Preliminary and detailed geological investigations, wind turbine foundation design, internal road network geometric design, pavement design and site supervision during construction. The Roggeveld wind energy facility has been designed to fit the local conditions with the technical details as follows:

Excelsior Wind Energy Facility consist of 13 GW121/2500 wind turbines with a generation capacity of 32.5 MW. The facility is located 30 km South East of Swellendam in the Western Cape Province.
BVi was appointed for the design and construction supervision of the balance of plant, which include the design of access and internal road networks, as well as the design of foundations for the wind turbines.
The approximate total cost of the project is estimated at 1.5 billion Rand, while the balance of plant is estimated at 110 million Rand.
The project is a new Table Grape Packing and Cooling Facility that will be able to receive, grade, pack and cool to -0.5° C 100 tons of export table grapes per 9 hour shift. Around 500 people will work in the facility and will use the latest imported productivity and tracking technology. The refrigeration includes a full SCADA system that monitors and controls the plantrooms and refrigerated spaces.
The project will also include a soft citrus packing facility when all phases have been completed.
Construction started in March 2019 and was completed by the end of November 2019 as per schedule. Production started in January 2020.
The South African National Roads Agency SOC (SANRAL) has identified the need to widen and improve two bridges on the N12 section 9 over the Orange River near Hopetown in the Northern Cape.
The widening of these structures namely B2482 and B2483 respectively, form part of an improvement project aimed at increasing the capacity of the existing route section as well as safety for roads users and pedestrians. The scope of works encompasses the widening and resurfacing of two said structures and the widening and realignment of the adjacent road sections. The section extends from km 2.568 to km 3.890, covering a total length of 1.32 km and provides a link between Britstown and Kimberley.

A 15kWp off-grid, ground-mount solar PV system was installed on a wooden sub-structure on Dassen Island.
The installation stores energy into a 48kWh Li-ion battery set and is integrated with a generator set as back-up.
The island is located 9km off Yzerforntein, Western Cape.
Since 2015 BVi has been involved in the design of five wind energy facilities throughout South Africa. One such facility near De Aar has been successfully completed, currently providing 100.5 MW of electricity to South Africa’s power grid, while two others (Perdekraal and Kangnas) are currently in construction with the remaining two (Excelsior and Golden Valley) scheduled to start construction in early 2019.
Combined, the five wind energy facilities will produce a total of 519.8 MW of electricity to the power grid of South Africa, relieving pressure currently put on our natural resources, such as coal, used to produce electricity.
Each wind energy facility has been designed to fit its local conditions.

Table Grapes for export markets, packing- and cooling facility
The facility is 10 500m² under roof with more than 500 people working in the facility. The packhouse receives 180 tons of grapes which is then cooled to 16 °C and then sorted and packed into 360 000 x 500 g punnets accurately made to weight and then assembled into pallets. The pallets is then cooled to -0.5 °C in 12 hours and then shipped in a total of 15 refrigerated shipping containers. The project had very tight timescales and the approaching harvest date cannot be moved or negotiated. A concurrent engineering approach was needed with designs and drawings being finalized for some disciplines after construction started. The adaption to Egyptian standards and way of doing things proved challenging together with language and distance from the site. BVi Northern Cape (Springbok) also had a full-time representative on site, spending almost 5 months in Egypt.
The BSG Warehouse, with an area of 20 000m², is located in Centurion, Gauteng.
It is equipped with 1115 light fittings of which 248 are LED highbay fittings.
Ships weighing up to 700 Tons are hoisted with the Synchrolift at Cape Town Harbour out of the water for maintenance of the ships typically every 5 years. The rails which are used to transfer the ships on land are in need of repairs. Replacement of the rails and improving the durability of the rail connecting mechanism at the transfer location where the Synchrolift connects to the fixed rails is necessary. Improving the drainage of the concrete slabs in the parking bay area’s is also an outcome of this project.
Installation of a 367 kWp grid-tied rooftop Solar PV system, consisting of 1129 PV panels and 15 x SMA inverters
The project consists of the Rehabilitation/Improvement, Routine Maintenance Works of N220 Chissano - Chibuto and N/C Crz. N220 - N1 (3 De Fevererio) located in the Gaza Province in Mozambique. The two roads fall within the Limpopo floodplain and have been damaged by recent floods, with sections of the roads washed away.
The scope of works includes the reconstruction and/or rehabilitation of 57 km of road including the construction of 52 box culvert structures, varying in size from 2 m x 1 m box culverts to 5 m x 3 m box culverts.
An existing bridge at km 20.5 of Road N220 has undergone severe erosion of the embankments, which has led to the collapse of the bridge approaches. Moreover, the existing bridge piers built on shallow foundations were also noted to show major signs of settlements which contribute to the structure being unsafe and unserviceable. The project scope includes the construction of a new 80m bridge to replace this existing along Road N220.
Phase I of the construction of the new Hani Park Primary School has been successfully completed with anticipated completion of Phase II end of May 2018.
The school consists of four classroom blocks totalling 27 classrooms, as well as additional structures for two computer laboratories, administration building, hall and gate house. The expected number of learners for Hani Park Primary School is to be in the vicinity of 1 080.

BVi Consulting Engineers Western Cape (Pty) Ltd was appointed by the Western Cape Government, Department of Transport and Public Works for the implementation of various rooftop Solar PV systems on several buildings identified in the Cape Town Metropolitan area, which are owned and/or operated by the Western Cape Government. BVi’s involvement entails the conceptual design, tender documentation, design approval, construction monitoring and contract administration.
These systems are grid-tied and reduce the purchase of grid electricity from the City of Cape Town. The savings from avoided electricity purchases are providing the financial returns necessary to justify additional capital and operating costs of the systems.

The project involved the redevelopment of the existing Centre Point site situated along Koeberg Road with the demolition of the existing shopping centre to make way for a modern retail centre.
The centre includes three levels of secure, covered basement parking with internal access to the mall, plus two floors of retail outlets such as Pick ‘n Pay, Clicks, a food hall, full banking lobby, clothing shops, and a range of restaurants overlooking Table Bay. The centre consists of 10 000m² of retail. The mall has also been designed to include the development of an apartment block consisting of 60 apartments that will boast enviable panoramic views of Table Bay and Table Mountain. Residents would have access to all retail space below.
BVi carried out the full Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) design for the development.
Design consultants for a 12 Ml reinforced concrete Reservoir for NamWater in the town of Rundu.
The geotechnical conditions were extremely difficult and the Rapid Impact Compaction method was used to improve soil conditions to achieve the required bearing capacity. This reservoir is some 53m in diameter and 6m high. Construction is progressing well at this point in time!
Visual audit of steel structures and civil works at Beeshoek North and South Mines in the Northern Cape.
The North Mine previously supplied all of Assmang’s iron ore output since 1964. A series of large-scale infrastructure projects had maximized efficiency and productivity on site, which included a full washing and screening plant and a jig plant to beneficiate off-grade ore. Assmang commissioned Beeshoek South Mine in 1999.
The various structural elements were each allocated a condition category ranging from 0 to 5 (0 signifying excellent condition and 5 little to no useful residual strength), followed by priority level recommending the required remedial action.
Other common observed issues included faulty connections, removed and modified structural members, excessive spillage, missing grout below baseplates, vehicular and equipment impact damage, and general damage to walkways.
The combined inspections of Beeshoek North and South Mine covered over 51 conveyors, plant and buildings.
Table Bay Mall is new shopping centre of 65 000m² expected to be completed in October 2017. Table Bay Mall is the 2nd largest after Mall of Africa. Underfloor heating is the most comfortable form of heating. It is unobtrusive, economical, safe, hygienic and virtually maintenance-free. It offers the best long-term method of heating a building because it uses low-temperature water.
Woolworths has embarked on installing water based underfloor heating in all its new stores in the food trading area. The under floor heating for Woolworths Table Bay Mall is designed to keep the Food Trading Area room temperature at 20 °C and floor temperature at 24°C
BVi have designed the system to maintain 20°C room temperature in the food trading area.
The project entails the construction of 6 buildings of 4 storeys each, consisting of 2 bedroom and 3 bedroom apartment blocks. The project commenced in July 2016, and will run for 18 months. The project is currently 20% complete.
The project comprised academic and student accommodation facilities for clinical departments, consisting of 20 tutorial rooms for 10 student groups, 10 lecture rooms for 50 student groups, 2 lecture rooms for 200 students, library and information services, research laboratory, student common room, cafeteria, ablution facilities, maintenance block, staff offices for 20 departments, and student accommodation for 600 students.
Detail design and construction monitoring of the replacement of foundations, structures and small part steel for its 3kV lines that are in need of replacement.
The project is divided into 5 Phases, spread out across 20km of railway tracks between various stations in the Cape Town area. The phasing is based on commuter volumes on the railway system and extent of corrosive decay of the steelwork observed on site.
Various types of structures at typical 67m spacing along the rail tracks suspend the electrical wires for the trains.
The appointment includes the survey of the existing infrastructure to identify the structures due for replacement. Structures with a rating of 2 or lower were allocated for replacement on more than 500 locations spread out over the 20km of railway track.
A contractor from Gauteng was appointed on a 2 year contract to the value of R80m to replace the structures. The contractor fabricates the steelwork in Gauteng and galvanizes and paints the steelwork with a Duplex paint system. All the steelwork is then transported by truck to Cape Town for erection under Permit conditions at night. Works started in July 2016 and is planned for completion in July 2018.
Camdekon Engineering (incorporated with BVi) was involved with the design and bulk earthworks and structural elements, which included reinforced concrete retaining walls and structural steel elements. The civil engineering services included roads, water supply infrastructure and sewers. The hospital resources centre building will be used for training and lecturing, and will be linked to the tertiary educational facility in Mthatha
BVi has been appointed by SANRAL for the detail design and construction monitoring of the realignment
of the N3 from Key Ridge to Hammarsdale. This critical portion of road suffers from heavy delays and congestion,
and this partial realignment forms part of the N3 capacity upgrade, while increasing road safety to users.
Our appointment includes the construction of two new viaducts, each with a separate southbound and northbound carriageway of 22.3m in width, carrying 5 lanes of traffic in both directions. The interesting and challenging aspects of designing both of these structures will be the 22.3m carriageway width, the construction sequences accommodating the current N3 alignment, and the foundation conditions of the site.
The rehabilitation and upgrading of National Route 1, Section 16 between Winburg Interchange (km 77.5) and the Winburg Station (km 89.8)
The project entails the upgrade from a 2 lane single carriageway to a 4 lane dual carriageway. The existing carriageway will also be rehabilitated in full.
Scope of work:
Construction of a second 2 lane carriageway in the northbound direction.
Rehabilitation of the existing carriageway as the southbound carriageway.
All aggregate and pavement layer material is mined and crushed on site. (Approximately 470 000m³ of rock material)
The new carriageway is constructed using rockfill from adjacent cuttings.

A new road over rail bridge structure is constructed to accommodate the second carriageway.
Several large drainage structures are extended to accommodate the second carriageway.
Truck staging area:
A stop and rest area for trucks are formalised by constructing a reinforced concrete pavement of 2.4ha in size.
This project, located on the N3 National Route between Durban and Pietermaritzburg, is the largest roads projects in the history of BVi Consulting Engineers. The essence of the project is the upgrading of the existing section of roadway from a six lane dual carriageway to a 10 lane facility as well as the realignment of the section to improve level of service and road user cost.
The project is part of the larger upgrade initiative of the N3 corridor which plays a major role in freight transport between Durban and Johannesburg. These two cities are the largest two economies in South Africa and therefore the need to provide well-functioning transport infrastructure between them.
The project covers a 10,2 km section of the N11 situated in KZN just south of the town Volksrust, which is on the border with Mpumalanga. The existing road was rehabilitated and partially re-aligned in 2008 but showed signs of premature failure, requiring investigation and repair.
BVi completed the assessment and design phases of the contract and prepared tender documentation for the proposed repair work. Construction period of 7 months.
Repair work on this contract will consist of the following:
- Shallow patching (50 mm) of existing cracked asphalt surfacing;
- Deep patching (150 mm) of existing surfacing and base layer where failures have occurred;
- Application of a bitumen fog spray to seal off the existing surfacing, followed by the construction of a new bituminous seal surfacing;
- Repair of existing guardrails and fencing;
- Clearing of existing drains and the installation of new drains;
- New road marking
Where there is a road, there is BVi Roads and Rail - even to the middle of the country, at a wind energy facility (WEF) in De Aar.
BVi is assisting the client, Murray & Roberts Infrastructure, with the planning and geometric design of the internal road network, which serves as access from the major roads to the 67 newly constructed wind turbines. Technical assistance is also provided with the foundation design.
Design, construction supervision and quality control of a new National English Literary Museum, including exhibition venues, archives, libraries, auditorium, theatre, offices, etc. The design is based on 5 Star GBSA Green rating specifications. The engineering works include a civil infrastructure portal and RC framed buildings, soil nailing and tanking.
The mixed use Century City Square development, which was developed by the Rabie Property Group at a cost of R1billion, has been awarded a 4-Star Green Star – Custom Mixed Use Design rating by the Green Building Council of South Africa.
This is the first development in the Western Cape to be awarded this Custom Mixed Use tool and only the second in the country.
Century City Square consists of a Conference Centre with a total capacity of 1900 over 20 venues, a 125 room hotel, 15 000 square metres of offices, 51 apartments, showrooms and restaurants all set around a public open square. The entire development is set over a super basement and this, together with a structured parking garage, provides under cover parking for 1330 cars.

Design of mechanical ventilation system to extract fumes from the extruction plant. The ventilation system was to comply with health and safety requirement and city of cape town health by-laws. The ventilation system was to provide the workers with a conducive and safe working environment.
Engineering Design, Project and Construction Management for the Construction of a new 5MVA 66/11kV Distribution Substation for Nababeep, Springbok
Blocuso irrigation dam is lined with HDPE pipelines and has capacity of 22,5 mega litres. The Dam has storage capacity for 18 hours for the total 216 ha.
Construction of the new change house and entrance security structure at Assmang Beeshoek South Mine.
New theatre for Mediclinic Upington. Forms part of an upgrade at the Hospital, worth R54m.
Upgrading of Eskom's Karoo Substation for the Square Kilometre Array (SKA SA) Project near Carnarvon in the Northern Cape. This Substation's capacity was increased from 10 MVA to 20 MVA with a transformer redundancy of N+1 to accommodate the expected loads of the KAT7 and MeerKAT Phases of the SKA SA project.
This project also included a 33kV line specifically designed to have low RFI interference, an underground MV cable feeder and LV distribution network to each antenna at the Core Site. The total cost amounts to ±R65million and was completed in 2012.
Earthworks during construction of the Blocuso Bulk Irrigation Scheme. The infrastructure is designed to supply irrigation water to 216ha newly established vineyards.
Upgrading of main road from N7-National Road to Hondeklipbaai. Approximately 82km of which the first phase was completed in 2015 at a cost of R45m and the second phase will be completed at the end of 2016 at a cost of R 85m. This road forms part of the planned network of connecting communities on the West Coast with the National Road Network, also incorporating a tourist route.
Extension of the D300 (District Road) over 13 kilometres to service various villages in the John Taolo Gaetswe District Municipality, Kuruman. The existing gravel road was upgraded to a road with a permanent tarred service. The total cost was R18m.
Supply, deliver, install and commissioning of a 80kWp Solar Photo Voltaic Generator with grid and generator support at the Manyeding Project.
River embankment protection at Farm Raap-en-Skraap near Onseepkans. Water for approximately 300ha of export quality table grapes is abstracted at Raap-en-Skraap. The embankment protects an inlet canal from where water is abstracted with multiple pumps. The embankment juts out into the stream and without protection is vulnerable to erosion due to the high water velocities in the river. The project was funded by the farm owners Keboes Fruit Farms which is a subsidairy of Karsten Farms (Pty) Ltd.
The aim of the project was to upgrade the main access road to Brandvlei. This road provides access to 280 households, 2 churches and 8 business plots.
During this project special attention was given to the channeling of problematic stormwater by providing kerbs, stormwater outlets and improving the stormwater outfall.
EPWP teams from the local community completed the following works:
Manufacturing and laying of kerbs and application of prime, stone and slurry layer (Macadam Seal) and stormwater related structures.
The base course was primed and thereafter 26mm of stone was distributed between the kerbs.
Surfacing of the base layer was done with a 30mm thick slurry seal. The slurry was mixed by hand and applied to the stone layer to form the final surfacing of the road.
All of these were completed by 55 local EPWP labourers from the community of Brandvlei.
Total road area covered were 6912 m² at a total cost of R1m.
Northern access road from the R27 to Paballelo, Upington. It was an EPWP funded project. To create temporary work for the local labourers. It was necessary to pave the road with interlocking pavers. Total project cost was about R4,7m.
The upgrading of Road DR3322 from N10 intersection to Karakoel Research Station was an Expanded Public Works funded project to create temporary job opportunities for the local community. The total project cost amounted to R17m.
The Sedibeng pipeline project is funded by Department of Water and Sanitation. The project entails the upgrading of existing 120km pipelines from the Treatment Plant at Henkries alongside the Orange River to Springbok. The works include the replacement of existing pipelines, upgrading of 4 main pumpstations and construction of concrete reservoirs. The installation of new pipelines to the communities of Concordia, Carolusberg and Nababeep is also part of the project. The approved budget for the project amounts to R500m. The first phase of the construction of the main pipeline will be completed in May 2016. The planning and design of the next phase is already in an advanced stage and construction commenced middle 2016.
Conduct detail assessment of the existing main dry docks pumps and drain pumps. The scope also included the assessment of associated valves, motor efficiency, ventilation to the plant rooms and fire fighting capabilities and requirements.
Conduct detail assessment of the existing 10 wharf cranes. The scope also included the assessment of mechanical components, NDT, load testing and electrical supply.
BVi was responsible for the electrical and infrastructure design and contract management for the repair and renovations of various low-rise buildings.
The following services were involved:
Lighting, small power, distribution boards, lightning protection, earthing and bonding, electrical infrastructure, miniature substations, emergency generator sets, 11kV main panel, 11kV overhead line, Area lighting, HVAC, Fresh air. Wet services, kitchen equipment, extraction canopy.
Complete knockdown and rebuilding of facilities to new Engen standards including modifications to the fuel installations, parking areas and water reticulation networks.
The new 400-bed state hospital with theatres, wards, laundry, kitchen, mortuary, ambulance EMS and married quarters. The project was extended with a new 42- bed TB hospital with its own laundry and kitchen.
The Forensic Science Building is regarded as one of the most complex and technically sophisticated buildings in South Africa. Various systems were installed under the electrical and mechanical trades to incorporate the clients’ requirements. Due to the usage of the facility, high security measures were implemented inside and outside the building.

This project was initiated due to the increasing frequency of algal blooms in the Orange River due to eutrophication. The high occurrence of algae tends to block sand filters hindering the production of potable water. A dissolved air flotation plant was constructed to remove the algae from the water.
This facility consists of the following structures or process units:
Bulk water supply from the Orange River to the town of Kenhardt and Lennertsville Village. Project comprised the following major components: Raw water abstraction pump station, 3km raw water rising main, 2.4 Ml/day water treatment plant, booster pump station, 28km rising main, 300kl elevated reservoir, 48km gravity main, MV power supply line, telemetry system.
This contract is for the supply of materials, equipment, plant and labour for the construction of an earth dam reservoir, receiving water for the Kalahari East Pipe Line, a 117m x 98m rectangular earth reservoir (33 200 cubic metre) HDPE lined earth dam with floating HDPE roof cover.
The project consisted of seven storeys of residential flats and underground basement parking in Kloof Road, Sea Point.
This project comprised the complete upgrade of a rather dilapidated heritage building. It consisted of a complete makeover of the building including all the engineering disciplines.
The primary objective of the first phase was to repair the failing plaster/grano façade of the building. This became a threat to pedestrian and vehicle traffic. This phase consisted of the removal and subsequent major concrete rehabilitation to an area of 28 400m². Use was made of external scaffolding supported on a reinforced concrete canopy over the sidewalk. This structure served as a scaffold support as well as safety for the pedestrians not to interrupt the building functionality. It is to be noted that the scaffolding was to the full 26 storeys – the highest used in the Southern Hemisphere.
The second phase was for additional facilities, basement parking, upgrading of the present Keerom Street walk-through to a functional and friendly pedestrian area with a restaurant and other public facilities.
This forensic science building is regarded as one of the most complex and technically sophisticated buildings in Southern Africa. The building was planned in a five “finger” pattern for the five different departments. It is a four-storey building with basement parking adding up to 26 000m² floor area. The offices wrap around each floor maximising the window space. Sustainable design features especially energy saving measures were brought into the design.

The project consisted of 7 residential floors, 3 parking floors and a basement for commercial use. The soil conditions on site were unstable due to heaving and collapsible red clay, which meant that the foundations had to be piled. The building was designed to have flexible joints between columns and balustrade beams to allow for possible soil settling or heaving. The residential floors have 16m wide balconies cantilevering 3m. These large curved balconies largely contributed to the aesthetic appeal of the building and could therefore not be supported at the lower level. A unique tie system was introduced in the partition walls using a tension/compression system between the slabs all the way to the roof to support the cantilever balconies.
