Job Summary:
We are seeking a Professional Mechanical Engineer to contribute to the design and delivery of mechanical building services projects across healthcare facilities, commercial developments, retail environments, and other infrastructure projects.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, coordination and implementation of mechanical engineering solutions while working as part of a multidisciplinary consulting team. The role requires sound technical knowledge, good project coordination skills, and experience within a consulting engineering environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Design and Technical responsibilities
- Design and coordinate mechanical building services, including:
- HVAC systems
- Wet services (water supply and drainage)
- Fire protection systems
- Medical gas and LPG systems
- Vertical transportation systems
- Prepare engineering calculations, specifications, reports and technical documentation.
- Assist with concept design, feasibility studies and detailed design development.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable SANS codes, regulations and client requirements.
- Prepare tender and construction documentation.
- Coordinate with other engineering disciplines throughout project delivery.
Construction and Contract Administration
- Conduct site inspections and monitor construction progress.
- Review contractor shop drawings and technical submissions.
- Assist with responding to technical queries during construction.
- Support contract administration, including payment recommendations and variation assessments where required.
- Participate in testing and commissioning activities.
- Review as-built drawings and operation and maintenance manuals.
Compliance, Quality Assurance and Safety
- Ensure designs comply with applicable SANS standards and statutory requirements.
- Follow project quality management procedures.
- Participate in project risk reviews where required.
- Assist with inspections and liaise with contractors and authorities during project implementation.
Minimum Requirements:
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (BEng or BSc Eng).
- Registered as a Professional Engineer (PrEng) with ECSA.
Experience
- Minimum 5 – 8 years relevant experience in mechanical engineering within the built environment.
- Experience in mechanical building services projects within the built environment, including healthcare, commercial, retail or institutional developments.
- Experience working within multidisciplinary consulting engineering teams.
- Exposure to healthcare mechanical systems, particularly:
- Medical gas systems
- Compressed air systems
- LPG installations
- Hot water systems
- Experience in HVAC design for large buildings, including Building Management Systems (BMS).
Key Skills and Competencies
- Advanced knowledge of South African engineering codes and standards.
- Excellent coordination, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
- Proficiency in:
- HAP load calculation software
- Microsoft Office
- AutoCAD / Autodesk Revit
- Strong technical report writing and documentation skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects under pressure while maintaining quality and deadlines.
- Understanding of project budgets and efficient project delivery.
Preferred Attributes
- Experience within a South African consulting engineering environment.
- Familiarity with Green Building Council South Africa standards, including Green Star SA.
- Exposure to healthcare facility projects would be advantageous.
- Sound knowledge of energy efficiency requirements and SANS 10400-XA compliance.
- Familiarity with international HVAC and fire protection standards such as ASHRAE, NFPA, EN and BS would be advantageous.
